Myths About Hypnosis

There are many misconceptions and myths about hypnosis. Most of them are due to misrepresentations on television and stage.  Hypnosis is perfectly safe and you never lose control!

IS HYPNOSIS SLEEP?

Hypnosis is not sleep and you are not unconscious!  It’s a state of keen awareness. The subject is wide-awake and aware of their surroundings.

WILL I LOOSE CONSCIOUSNESS?

No,  This is probably the most common misconception surrounding hypnosis.  Hypnosis is focused concentration and you will be far more focused and awake than ever before.  No person has ever gotten “stuck” in hypnosis.  This is the biggest myth of all about hypnosis.

IS THERE A HYPNOTIZED FEELING?

Hypnosis does not feel like anything because it is simply focused concentration.  There is no hypnotized feeling. Most people feel very relaxed when in hypnosis because relaxation is given as a suggestion. Some people feel heavy, others feel light or feel other sensations. While some perfectly the same when they are in hypnosis, others believe they have not been hypnotized when they most definitely have hypnotized.   Donna is a trained professional and trained to constantly check the level of hypnosis.

CAN THE HYPNOTIST CONTROL ME?

NO! The hypnotist cannot make you do anything against your will. There is always your observing ego state. Should the hypnotist make an offensive suggestion; this ego state would reject the suggestion. You will probably come out of hypnosis if the hypnotist makes an offensive suggestion.

CAN THE HYPNOTIST MAKE ME DIVULGE SECRETS?

You will not divulge any secrets under hypnosis unless you want to do so. The hypnotist does not have any control over the subject. The subject can easily reject any suggestion made by the hypnotist. The subject can open eyes, emerge or walk out of the room at any time.   The subject can even lie in hypnosis.

CAN PEOPLE GET STUCK IN HYPNOSIS?

A subject cannot get “stuck” in hypnosis, as there is constant dialog. There is no such thing as getting stuck in hypnosis.  Since all hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis, you can readily revive yourself at any time.

MUST PEOPLE TELL THE TRUTH IN HYPNOSIS?

NO! People can easily lie when in hypnosis.

DO HYPNOTISTS HAVE SPECIAL POWERS OR VIBRATIONS?

The hypnotist does not have any special powers or special vibrations with which to hypnotize you. Actually, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotist leads the subject into a state of hypnosis. In other words, the ability of hypnosis is with the client.

WEAK MINDEDNESS:

Some believe that only fools can be hypnotized.  The truth is, because hypnosis requires concentration, the best clients are actually the more intelligent of the population.

What is the difference between Stage Hypnosis and Insight-Based Hypnosis?

Stage Hypnosis, like what was recently portrayed in America’s Got Talent is also referred to as comedy hypnosis.

Stage hypnosis is a style of hypnosis typically done on stage, in front of an audience. Unlike clinical hypnosis which is used to help someone with a problem, stage hypnosis is purely designed to be entertainment. This type of hypnotism is not intended as any type of therapy.

Insight-Based Hypnosis (5-PATH® Hypnosis) helps people change unwanted behaviors and gives the motivation to reach goals when nothing else has helped.  In fact many clients wish they started first with hypnosis.  It is a wonderful tool to take back control.  Hypnosis has been sanctioned and used by the medical community since 1958 to help people overcome chronic pain, deal with stress and anxiety as well as a host of other everyday issues.

Can I be Hypnotized?

Of course you can!   You already have been hypnotized.  It’s easy to go into hypnosis and it is a normal state of mind that everyone has already experienced.   In fact, hypnosis is such a normal state of mind, most people usually don’t even realize they are hypnotized.  Hypnosis is something you experience, one does not go “under hypnosis” as that is a myth.   You are also in complete control while experiencing hypnosis.  In fact you awareness is greatly enhanced.

Normal, everyday hypnosis occurs when you are driving down the road and lose track of time, or when you are focusing on a book or television program and you don’t even notice something that is going on around you.

All you need to do to be hypnotized is follow the instructions of the hypnotherapist and you can put the power of hypnosis to work for you.   Most people, with the willingness to follow instructions, can experience hypnosis and use it to improve their life.   This includes children and teenagers.
